This unassuming magazine shelf has been in production for an extended period. Typically measuring 13.5 inches in width, variations occasionally exist with wider dimensions.
Notably, the distinctive D handles contribute to the stand's functional and aesthetic appeal. A hallmark of Stickley's design is the inclusion of a peg extending through the board above the handle, a feature aimed at preventing wood splitting and preserving the handle's form. This design detail is notably absent in contemporary imitations. Similar peg construction can be observed in other Stickley designs, such as the book rack #74 and desk #721, showcasing a consistent commitment to craftsmanship and structural integrity.
Unfortunately, economic challenges prompted the removal of the arch in this and other designs during a period when the company faced financial difficulties. Despite this alteration, the enduring production of this simple yet versatile magazine shelf underscores its longevity and practical design.

This particular model made its debut in a 1903 edition of The Craftsman and was manufactured until the end of production. Remarkably, the model underwent very few modifications throughout its production span. An uncommon variant of this model includes a music stand featuring two additional shelves positioned between the second and third shelf. Such music stands are frequently discovered in the ebonized black finish, adding to their desirability among collectors and enthusiasts.

The model showcased here holds a special significance for me due to its sentimental value. This was one of the first pieces my wife, Robin, and I acquired when we began our journey as collectors. Robin discovered this exceptional piece at Mays in Brimfield 35 years ago, acquiring it for $2,000.
In the realm of early magazine stands, there exist three fundamental variations, each available in both three and four-shelf configurations. The other two variations feature post and beam constructions—one with paneled sides akin to the presented model and the other with chamfered sides composed of three boards. Notably, the alternative models predominantly incorporate leather with tacks on both the fronts and backs of the shelves. The illustrated variation of the stand above has surfaced only once with additional leather ornamentation.

The reverse taper evident in the form serves as a testament to the architecturally grounded designs characteristic of early Stickley creations by Henry Wilkinson. This particular design is exceptionally rare, with fewer than a handful of known examples in existence.
The architectural elements, such as the arched side panels, arched top shelf, pedestal, and capstone-like feature atop the form, draw parallels to other early designs like the cathedral bookcase and #165 divan.
