This stool, also referred to as a "Gout Stool," was designed to keep the user’s feet off cold, drafty floors. The model came in two variations. The earliest version, the Notched Footstool, was only manufactured for only one year. The notched feet are cuboid-shaped with a square base, and the outward-facing surfaces of the legs feature convex sides. Made from leftover scraps of larger projects, this model proved to be highly profitable, and the company continued producing these small footstools until the end.
Regular Footstool Price Range: $300 - $1,200
Notched Footstool Price Range: $900 - $2,500
The Spindle Footstool was designed to complement Peter Hansen’s spindle line of furniture. The earlier versions feature through-tenons that secure the stretchers to the legs. This footstool came in oak and rarely mahogany. While the models with tenons are generally considered more desirable, some collectors prefer the simpler more modern versions without them.
Price Range: $600 - $2,000
The model shown is the earliest and most sought-after version, featuring a full arch, through-tenons, and brass tacks. Similar stools were made in various sizes, and a rare luggage rack also follows the basic form but is elongated. As production progressed, the company removed the through-tenons and replaced the rounded brass tacks with just pyramidal tacks at the corners. In the later models, the graceful arch was replaced with a straight apron. The original arched design pairs beautifully with the bow-arm Morris chair, making this set particularly desirable.
Price Range: $500-$2,500
Originally priced at $8.75, the "Eastwood" footstool pictured above sold for an impressive $40,000 at auction in 2013. These footstools represent the pinnacle of craftsmanship from one of the company's earliest production periods. They pair beautifully with both the Eastwood chair and the bow-arm chair. Signed examples, with their original finish, leather upholstery, and brass tacks, are highly coveted and command premium prices. The version shown above is approximately 2 inches taller than the standard model, making it a unique example and a key factor in its success at auction.
Price Range: $2,500 - $10,000
