Good Lamp Tables

Gustav Stickley #604 Lamp table

The model 604 lamp table is available with various sized tabletops and heights, each identified by a slightly different catalog number.

In earlier variations, the legs are fastened to the trumpeted cross stretchers with through tenons, and pyramidal finials adorn the juncture of the stretchers. The illustrated lamp table features notched stretchers with a faceted finial in the center, reflecting Stickley's mid-period design. Later lamp tables omit the finial altogether. Additionally, there are Ellis variations with elegant arched cross stretchers.

Price Range: $500 - $3,500

Better Lamp Tables

Gustav Stickley Clip-Corner Lamp Table #611

Some of the earliest and finest Stickley forms, like the Eastwood Chair and Grueby Tile Top #52T, feature a clipped corner as seen in the pictured table’s tabletop. While earlier examples have through tenons, later ones do not.

The pictured lamp table utilizes decoratively arched stretchers to support the lower shelf to increase its aesthetic appeal. Similar round variations of the same form come with a large shelf. Notably, lamp tables with bottom shelves have gained popularity among collectors as they offer additional space to display ceramics and copper.

Price Range: $700 - $5,500

Best Lamp Tables

Gustav Stickley #411 Lamp Table

Lamp table, #411, 1901; 29"h x 30"d.

The 411 table, designed by Henry Wilkinson, features subtle arches in the negative space between the legs. Constructed with an honest and complex key tenon method to avoid the use of nails and pegs, this table reflects meticulous craftsmanship. Slightly later variants eliminate the notch at the top of the legs to reduce construction cost. Due to its intricate design, it was only produced from 1901 to 1902.

Available in various sizes, these tables are sometimes found with beautiful hexagonal tops. Occasionally, one may appear with a leather top secured in place with large round tacks.

Price Range: $3,000 - $20,000

Exceptional Lamp Tables

Gustav Stickley Chalet Lamp Table

Chalet Table, #402, 1901-2; 30"h x 30"d.

This table was designed as part of a chalet set of furniture in 1901. The large example shown above is one of maybe three or four known to exist, one of which is made of chestnut. There are numerous examples of the smaller variation: 24 inches in diameter by 22 inches in height.

The Chalet table embodies simplicity in its design using complex woodworking techniques and guided by integral Arts & Crafts principals. All the boards in the stretchers and legs share the same dimensions, meaning only one board could be used to create the bottom half of the table. A simple but challenging miter mullion joint fastens the stretchers demonstrating skill whilst maintaining the table’s unassuming clean nature. The proportions of the table are meticulously crafted, 30 inches around by 30 inches high. With three legs, the table maintains stability while incorporating an attractive overhang without compromising functionality. Every decision made in building the Chalet table was a minimalist statement, exploring the essence of what makes a table.
